Brownsville district’s newsletter receives honors
The Pennsylvania School Boards Association (PSBA) announced the Brownsville Area School District as its 2006 Award of Excellence recipient within its Annual Educational Publications Contest. Specifically, PSBA awarded its prestigious distinction for the school district’s periodic publication of its community newsletter, the Brownsville Area Bulletin. The newsletter is written and edited by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Harry Miale who began producing the publication shortly after his arrival at Brownsville in 2004.
“When I started, the newsletter was one of the things I wanted to introduce here,” said Miale. “So many of the school districts in this area are fragmented and that is also the case here. All of the area schools were consolidated in 1965, and we have so many different parts within the district. This was something we did to unify the district and get people to take pride in the entire school district.”
Miale said he is very proud that the newsletter received such an honor from the state after only a short time.
“It is remarkable that we just started the newsletter three years ago and it has received the state’s highest honor,” said Miale.
He added that the newsletter has been well received by students, parents, and others in the community.
“We have heard nothing but positive things about it,” said Miale, adding that even in the event of an error, the number of comments that are received about the mistake are appreciated because “a lot of people are looking at it.”
Miale said that the district also has a mailing list of other school districts, and they share their newsletter with those districts.
“We send them our newsletter and we get theirs, and we can share ideas that way,” said Miale.
The district’s recognition was noted by Superintendent Lawrence Golembiewski at the most recent school board meeting, and he congratulated Miale and everyone else involved in producing the newsletter.
