2 medical helicopters transport injured in Georges Twp. wreck
GEORGES TWP. – Two people suffered moderate injuries Tuesday when the pickup truck they were traveling in slammed into a concrete wall and then struck a utility pole on Morgantown Road about one mile past Smithfield. State police trooper Matt Alexson said Edward Thompson and Barbara Kaputa, both of Point Marion, were in fair condition prior to being transported from the scene by two medical helicopters.
According to officials at the scene, the two were traveling north on Morgantown Road when their white Mazda pickup left the roadway and crashed into the stone and concrete wall, throwing debris about 40 feet from the truck.
The pickup then continued about 20 feet further, where it struck a utility pole.
First responders reported both Thompson and Kaputa were entrapped when crews arrived on the scene.
Several power lines were down as a result of the crash and traffic was reduced to a single lane as emergency crews worked to clear the Georges Township roadway.
Debris littered the yard where the badly mangled pickup came to rest.
In addition to the state police, the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, Fairchance Ambulance, Allegheny Power, HealthNet and LifeFlight responded to the afternoon crash.
Thompson is in the surgical intensive care unit and Kaputa is in stable condition at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., according to hospital officials.
