2 min read

The Center for National Policy will present the 2006 Edmund S. Muskie Distinguished Public Service Award to U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Johnstown) today. “The Center for National Policy is pleased to honor Congressman Murtha for his lifetime of patriotic service to our nation. From his 37 years as a Marine officer, including two years in Vietnam where he earned two Purple Hearts, and through his 16 terms in the House of Representatives representing the people of the 12th Congressional District, Congressman Murtha’s career has been a powerful example of the kind of public service personified by the late Sen. Ed Muskie. Congressman Murtha’s dedication to keeping America’s military strong, to supporting military families and his courageous decision to voice an alternative policy for Iraq in the face of strong political opposition has earned Congressman John Murtha the 2006 Edmund S. Muskie Distinguished Service Award,” according to officials.

During the presentation luncheon, Murtha will make a national security address that will last approximately 10 minutes.

The Edmund S. Muskie Distinguished Public Service Award honors the late Edmund S. Muskie (1914-1996), who served our nation in the Navy, as governor of Maine, as U.S. senator and as U.S. secretary of state. He chaired the CNP board following his retirement from government service.

The Center for National Policy (CNP) is a non-profit, non-partisan public policy organization whose mission is to enhance America’s security and prosperity by engaging our national leaders with practical and innovative policy solutions.
