Vo-tech guidance counselor resigns after 10 years

Ten-year guidance counselor at the Fayette County Area Vocational-Technical School (FCAVTS) has recently resigned, opting to take an assistant director job at the Greene County Career & Technology Center. Linda Murphy, who would have been entering her 21st year at the Fayette County school, submitted her resignation Friday. It will be formally presented to the school’s operating committee for acceptance in August.

Murphy said she can start her duties at the new school this Monday.

She stated Wednesday her reason for leaving the school she has known for over 20 years was because she saw no opportunity to gain an administrative position.

In January, the committee eliminated the assistant director position at the request of then-acting director Dr. Edward Jeffreys, replacing it with a business manager, a position local accountant Greg Hensh currently holds.

Murphy recently gained her director’s certification, which one of her fellow employees announced to committee members at the June board meeting.

“Director was the position I wanted to head toward,” she said. “I saw there wasn’t an opportunity to gain an administrative position [at FCAVTS] and I saw an opportunity for a new position created in Greene County. I knew that was where I wanted to go.

“Everything seemed to fall into place. The timing was right,” she added.

Jeffreys said Wednesday he will present the committee with Murphy’s resignation at the August meeting. Meanwhile, the school is advertising for a guidance counselor position.

Murphy, he said, will be missed.

“She was instrumental in helping students have success at the school,” said Jeffreys. “She is a very positive influence for our students. We wish her well in her new position.”

Murphy, meanwhile, said the Greene County vocational school is moving forward, doing many good things, including a multi-million renovation. She said school administration and board members are working together to further develop the building and enhance its programs.

“The school seems to be progressing and it has a very supportive board,” she said. “I like what they’ve done at the school and hopefully we can move it forward.”

Though looking forward to the new opportunity, she said she will miss the great teachers she has worked with at FCAVTS.

“I have worked with a lot of people who have been supportive,” said Murphy, noting she ranked second in the number of employees at the school for the longest time.

“I’ve seen everybody come and go. There are a lot of wonderful teachers and people I will miss, she said. “I’ll miss the familiar faces, but I’m also really looking forward to a change, and it will be a big change for me.”

The executive secretary of the Greene County school confirmed that Murphy was accepted to the newly-created assistant director position, while the director of the school was unavailable for comment Wednesday.
