Local youths show off sewing skills

By The 3 min read

Wearing beautiful clothing and the biggest of smiles, local youths revealed their sewing talents to fairgoers Sunday in the annual 4-H Fashion Show. “These girls did a lot of hard work,’ Cathy Brady, extension educator for Penn State Cooperative Extension, told the crowd that gathered to watch the show, held at 3 p.m. in the Youth Building.

The show included youths from two sewing clubs: Chestnut Ridge Stitchers with Amy Knopsnider as leader and Come Sew With Me with Pam Howarth as leader.

Participants included Molly McClure, Sarah Zajac and Sarah Zuzak of Come Sew With Me and Sierra Emert and Alyssa Fratto of Chestnut Ridge Stitchers while Olivia Brown of Chestnut Ridge also appeared later.

Members of these clubs were given the opportunity to show off the work they’ve accomplished from the last several months.

Each girl modeled her own clothing from shorts to pants to dresses in a non-competitive setting. Participation in the show is voluntary. The girls will bring their pieces back to the fair today to be entered for competition that will be judged on Tuesday.

Fayette County Fair Queen Rebecca Giles of Belle Vernon acted as master of ceremonies for the show, announcing the names of the girls and describing their outfits. Several had participated in last month’s Southwest Fashion Revue held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.

Howarth also made remarks during the show, noting, “Throughout the year, Cathy and I taught the girls how to use tools and sewing machines. We tried to teach them basics. Some work is more detailed.’

The youths talked after the show about reasons why they enjoy sewing and being a member of 4-H.

“You get to meet new people and enjoy a new experience,’ said McClure, 15, of Smock.

“It’s fun because you get to learn new things,’ said Zajac, 10, of Uniontown.

“It’s fun and easy to do,’ said Brown, 10, of White. “You can fix your own clothes if you get a hole in them.’

“I like seeing friends,’ said Fratto, 11, of Melcroft.

“Creating your own clothes,’ said Emert, 11, of Bullskin Township.

They are all proud of their work, noting they wear the clothes they make. Both Fratto and Emert wore the outfits they made last year to school on the first day.

Brady said both clubs are looking for new members for next year while Howarth also offered an invitation to join.

We have plenty of room for younger girls,’ Howarth said. “Come sew with us – it’s something you can use forever.’
