Bankruptcy filed by owners of care home

The owners of a Jefferson Township personal care home that was the site of a fatal fire in 1999 have filed for bankruptcy protection. Filed earlier this month in Pennsylvania Western Bankruptcy Court, the filing stated that Dainty’s Valley Elderly Care Inc. owed anywhere from 50 to 99 creditors between $1 million to $10 million in debts.

The Pennsylvania corporation was listed as a partnership between brothers Timothy and Randy Tisot.

The filing listed liabilities of $870,831, including a $660,775 debt to National City Bank, and $10,276 to Perry Drug Store.

Three residents were killed in an early morning fire at the care home on Sept. 13, 1999. Extensive fire damage forced the Tisots to rebuild.

They continued providing services for patients with a limited amount of space, and fully reopened the business in 2003.

When the home was reopening, Timothy Tisot said the rebuilt Dainty’s was more secure and had additional features to make it safer for residents.

Fire investigators believed that a disposed, but still a cigarette butt started the fire. There were 37 residents on the night of the fire.

The fire was reported around 4 a.m., and 14 fire departments responded.

It took nearly three hours to quell the blaze, according to authorities.

Irene Barker, 90, and Audrey “Mac” Patterson, 84, were pronounced dead at the scene, while Elvira Pasqualoni, 97, died several days later in the burn unit of Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
