Big Brothers Big Sisters schedule annual ‘Bowl for Kids’ for April 2

2 min read

Lucky strikers and gutter-ball bowlers alike can make a difference in children’s lives through participation in the Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraising event. Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Laurel Region along with Wal-Mart will hold the 22nd annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake April 2 at Greensburg’s Hillview Lanes.

The bowling sessions start at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. Participants can enjoy complimentary refreshments and music while bowling.

Each team can include up to five bowlers and collect a minimum of $60 per bowler in tax-deductible donations. All donations directly fund BBBS programs in Fayette and Westmoreland Counties. Trophies are awarded for the group and individual bowler with the most donations.

Everyone collecting $60 or more will receive a 2006 Bowl for Kids’ Sake T-shirt, food beverage and bowling. In addition, people collecting between $100 and $199 will earn one Idlewild Park ticket, while those collecting $200 to $299 will earn one Kennywood Park ticket.

Bowlers who collect over $300 will earn the ticket and a Wal-Mart gift card.

Bowl For Kids’ Sake is also sponsored in part by Allegheny Power and Hillview Bowling Lanes.

BBBS of the Laurel Region provides support services necessary for youth to gain a valuable education and improve self-confidence. The group fulfills its mission “to help children reach their fullest potential through mentoring relationships” through community and school-based programs. The chapter tailors its programs to meet each child’s individual needs.

National studies report that children involved in BBBS programs are less likely to use drugs, skip school, or create problems in their neighborhoods. At the same time, the Laurel Region chapter’s outcome data indicate that local involvement improves children’s self-confidence, attitudes toward school, grades in at least one subject, and peer relationships.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America was founded in 1904. In 1976 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westmoreland County was formed. After expanding its services to Fayette County in 2001, the agency’s name was changed to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region. Today approximately 500 children participate in the agency’s programs annually.
