New road name pending

1 min read

The state Senate Transportation Committee on Wednesday unanimously approved a bill by state Sen. Richard A. Kasunic (D-Dunbar) to rename the Somerset County portion of state Route 219 as the “Flight 93 Memorial Highway.” Route 219 runs north/south through Pennsylvania, from New York to the Maryland border.

“This highway will serve as the main access route to the Flight 93 Memorial, which was being built on the crash site near Shanksville,” Kasunic said. “This is a fitting tribute to the passengers and crew on Flight 93, who courageously fought terrorist hijackers and prevented the plane from reaching its target and killing even more people in Washington, D.C.”

United Flight 93 crashed on Sept. 11, 2001. A memorial is being constructed at the crash site at a new 2,200-acre national park.

The Kasunic legislation (Senate Bill 1088) now goes before the full Senate for consideration.
