Board details condemnations for project

WEST BROWNSVILLE – The Center-West Sewer Authority announced that they filed 27 condemnations in order to acquire rights of way for their sewerage project during a regular meeting Thursday. With the project set to serve 1,185 customers in West Brownsville, Centerville and California, Chairman Dan Kendall said that number of condemnations is low.

“We started out with about 200 rights of way. Now, we’re down to 27,” he said. “I feel we’re going to gain five of those once they get the condemnation notices. Some people will come forward to work out a deal.”

Kendall said the authority has been collecting rights of way for close to a year.

In a related matter, the authority discussed the slow progress in obtaining the right of way near the Denbo/Vesta 6 area pump station.

Solicitor Jack Purcell said Rural Utility Services (RUS) has approved the authority to obtain the pump station property after the right of way has been acquired.

The authority also discussed a meeting held with Centerville concerning a road-restoration agreement in which the authority agrees to restore any roads disturbed during the sewerage project.

“The sewage system is going to solve a big community problem,” Purcell said. “We don’t want to create another problem with bad roads. Road restoration is a constant issue in these projects.”

The authority also agreed to pay the borough $200 rent for office space used partially for sewage authority business.
