Newspaper personnel change announced
Angie Oravec has been named as the Herald-Standard’s education reporter. She replaces Steve Ostrosky, who resigned recently.
Oravec has been employed with the Herald-Standard since November of 2002 when she started as a part-time reporter working on feature and general assignment stories. Before becoming a part-time reporter, Oravec, under her maiden name Santello, worked as a freelance writer for the Herald-Standard.
Shortly after graduating from Waynesburg College with a bachelor’s degree in communication, emphasis on professional writing, in May of 2003, she was promoted to full-time status as a municipal beat reporter, continuing to also write features and general assignment stories.
Oravec says she’s looking forward to her new job.
“With demands to meet standards set by the No Child Left Behind Act, which requires PSSA testing, and unforeseen state mandates, I realize the precarious position many school districts are in,” she said. “Despite this, I have a duty as a journalist to write about what the people want or should know, about what affects them.
“I am excited about my new role. And, while I am thrilled to write about the numerous good things schools are doing, oftentimes news that is not-so advantageous for the school districts, but is of utmost importance to the public, develops and must be reported,” added Oravec.
“I’m certain that Angie will do an excellent job as our education reporter,’ said Mark O’Keefe, executive editor of the Herald-Standard. “She not only has a lot of writing talent, but she has a terrific work ethic. I’m sure she’ll be an asset to the newsroom in her new position.’
A lifelong resident of Menallen Township, Oravec is married to John Oravec, and they have a 19-month-old son, Johnny.
In addition to covering local school boards, Oravec will handle the Education Page, which runs every Saturday and on various other days during the week.
Oravec can be reached by phone at 724-425-7221, by fax at 724-439-7559 or by e-mail at hseducation@heraldstandard.com.
O’Keefe also announced that Rebekah Sungala has been promoted from part-time reporter to full-time reporter to fill Oravec’s former position.
