News & Notes: Turkey action slow

By Rod Schoener 2 min read

Last week’s rainy weather put the damper on the gobbler hunting. Not a single bird was turned in for the big gobbler pool at Marra’s Mountaineer Sport Shop as of Thursday afternoon.

Bill Rozzell was the overall leader after the first full week of the season, where seven gobblers were checked in. That was through May 4.

Action picked up a little on May 5, as Bill Myers and Jeff Halfhill checked their gobblers, and three more were checked on Saturday, May 6 as Vince Komacko Jr., Steve Zinn and Joseph Mark Skocik harvested birds.

Rozzell held the lead until Monday, May 8, when Allen Baird bagged a 21 1/2-pounder that bumped him to second place.

Baird’s gobbler had a 10 7/8-inch beard and 1 1/2-inch spurs to score 73.25 points – .50 points better than the previous leader.

Action was good the rest of that second week as Ron Radacsy bagged a 21 1/4-pounder May 10, Shawn Golden an equally-heavy gobbler on May 12 and Toby Wilburn and Alex Bozek each killed a gobbler on May 13.

Previously, junior hunter Dan Kletcho Jr. held honors for the longest beard at 10 7/8-inches, but he was tied by Baird and Golden.

However, it was the spurs on Baird’s gobbler that pushed him to the front a pair of 1 1/2-inch hooks exceed those off all others.

KIDS FISHING DAY: The annual Kids Fishing Day on Dunbar Creek will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 27 at the Bluestone (bait fishing) area of the creek.

Dunbar Sportsmen’s Club will have refreshments available, and the Chestnut Ridge Chapter of Trout Unlimited will stock trout that morning.
