Service planned A Memorial Day service will be held at LaFayette Memorial Park Sunday.

Braznell American Legion Post 838 is hosting the ceremony at 1 p.m., with Brownsville Post 295, Brownsville Auxiliary Post 295, Grindstone Post 275, Republic Post 590 and West Brownsville 940 also participating.

“We’re going to honor two Gold Star Mothers, Hazel Camino of Brownsville and Virginia Cassin of Newell,” said Mario Antonucci, the Brownsville Post 295 Adjutant.

Gold Star mothers are those who have lost a child who was serving in the U.S. armed forces in a foreign conflict.

The main speaker for Sunday’s ceremony will be Fayette County Sheriff Gary Brownfield, who will be introduced by Fayette County Register of Wills Donald Redman.

A salute will be fired by the American Legion honor guard and “Taps” will be played by Stanley Gates. Heather Hoseapple will sing “God Bless America,” Antonucci said.

Antonucci said the Legion posts have been putting flags on the graves of veterans buried at various area cemeteries.

Holiday hours posted

The Washington Rides (Washington County Transportation Authority Office) will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

The Washington Rides office will reopen on Tuesday at regular hours. All Washington Rides passengers should schedule with the Washington Rides office no later than Friday before 3 p.m. for trips on Saturday and before 4 p.m. for trips on Monday and Tuesday.

Although the Washington Rides Office is closed for the holiday, cab service still will be available. For cab service, call a reservationist for more details.
