SPRINGHILL TWP. – A man was seriously injured when a rock fell on his head at a local industrial site, officials said Thursday. The unidentified man suffered the injuries when a 200-pound rock fell on him while he was working at Laurel Aggregates Inc. on Springhill-Furnace Road around 1:45 p.m., authorities said.

According to Randy Leech, Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief, the man was taken from the scene by emergency helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.

Leech said the man was not trapped or pinned by the falling rubble.

The man’s condition was not available.

Janna Kerns-Jenkins, spokeswoman for Laurel Aggregates, said the unnamed employee was injured when a “blasting accident” occurred.

Kerns-Jenkins said the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Mine Safety and Health Administration were at the blast site Thursday afternoon and added that a “full investigation” will be conducted.

Fairchance Ambulance and Health Net emergency helicopter also responded to the afternoon accident, a spokesman from Fayette County 911 said.

No further information on the incident was available as of press time.
