Expressway at a glance

By The 1 min read

The 70-mile Mon/Fayette Expressway, which will be designated Route 43, is supposed to connect Interstate 68 near Morgantown, W.Va., to Pittsburgh, but all the money needed to complete construction of the toll-road has not yet been secured. Approximately 35 miles of the expressway system are operational.

The last section to open was a 17-mile stretch from Interstate 70 in Washington County to Route 51 in Jefferson Hills, Allegheny County. It opened in April 2002.

Opened in March 2000 were the northern 6.2 miles of the expressway’s 12-mile Mason Dixon Link south of Uniontown that eventually will link with I-68. The southernmost 1.6 miles in Pennsylvania will open when the 4.2-mile West Virginia side is completed. Construction is under way and is expected to be completed by 2010 or 2011.

The northern 6.2 miles of the Mason Dixon Link connects to a four-mile, non-tolled section of the expressway in the Fairchance area, which was opened in November 1992.

Extending south from the Route 70-to-Route 51 section that opened in April 2002 is the six-mile California Toll Road between Interstate 70 and Route 40, which opened in October 1990.

The expressway system includes the 31-mile Southern Beltway, which would run from the expressway in the Finleyville area in Washington County to Pittsburgh International Airport via the Route 60 Expressway.
