Matthew Cavalcante, a 2006 graduate of Albert Gallatin High School, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Stephen R. Haky Funeral Home Inc. of Uniontown and the Haky Funeral Home Inc. of Masontown. As well as academic excellence and being enrolled in a college for the fall term of 2006, award winners had to write an essay of no less than 500 words expressing how their school and teachers inspired them to pursue higher education.

The funeral homes offered two scholarships to students from Uniontown, Laurel Highlands and Albert Gallatin high schools.

Cavalcante of Masontown is majoring in information and technology at Penn State University’s University Park Campus.
