POINT MARION – Borough council announced Wednesday it received a $179,000 grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to pay for continued projects at the community park. Councilman Joe Murphy said the grant will be used to pay for such things as renovations at the park and increased security lighting.

In other business, borough manager Art Strimel announced a public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 to discuss updates on the major waterline repair project the borough has been involved with over the last several months.

The borough applied for a 40-year federal loan that will pay to replace 60 percent of the borough’s water lines, many of which are about 100 years old.

Borough engineer Steve Buchanan previously said residents could expect to see about a $6 increase in the water bills to pay for the cost of replacing the water lines.

The project is estimated to cost about $1.25 million.

As for other matters, council said community members are invited to attend a community picnic at the park from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 15.

The picnic is being sponsored by the Friends of the Park and the Community Area Planning Committee.

Council also announced trick or treating will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.

Anyone wishing to participate should turn on a porch or yard light.

The borough Halloween Parade will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 25, with lineup scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Herod Funeral Home parking lot.
