Family Field Day set at Cal U The California University chapter of The Wildlife Society will present a Family Field Day from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22 at the Frich Biology Building on the California University campus.

The free event will be held rain-or-shine with eight stations, including bluebird box construction, furbearer identification, reptile and amphibian identification, fly-tying and casting, introduction to radio telemetry, how many bears in the woods, animal track identification with competition and bird song identification.

The program is geared to show the public what biologists do.

Audubon program

Sue Olcott will offer a free presentation about endangered species and how peregrine falcons, bald eagles and loggerhead shrikes, in particular, are faring at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Public Safety Building at the corner of Spruce and Walnut St. in Morgantown, W.Va.

Olcott is president of Mountaineer Audubon and is with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Trout stockings

For those who forgot to check the calendar, the Fish and Boat Commission stocked trout last week as part of the fall stocking program.

In Fayette County, the Youghiogheny River was stocked Wednesday, Dunbar Creek and Meadow Run were stocked Thursday and Dunlap Creek Lake and Virgin Run Dam were stocked Friday.

Laurel Hill Creek in Somerset County was stocked Wednesday.

In Washington County Dutch Fork Creek was stocked Tuesday, Pike Run Wednesday and Little Chartiers Creek on Friday. Little Chartiers Creek was also on the list for last week.

In Westmoreland County. Loyalhanna Creek was stocked Tuesday and Indian Creek was stocked Wednesday.

Erie report

Significant rainfall over the past week has kept the streams high and very muddy at times.

Recent rains had the streams loaded with steelhead.

Catches were tough given the conditions but as the water levels subside an influx of many more steelhead is predicted.

Erie County WCOs report that bass anglers have been working Presque Isle Bay with fair to good success.

Pistol workshop

Long Branch Sportsmens Club will hold a Bullseye Pistol Workshop at the Club on Sphar Road at 7 p.m. Tuesday October 17.

Gun Safety will be discussed as well as shooting techniques and range etiquette.

After the teaching session, two lines of NRA 50 Pistol competition will be shot.

Loaner equipment and ammo will be available. Beginner shooters welcome.
