Roger C. Yanssens

Roger C. Yanssens, age 70, of New Alexandria, Ohio, and formerly of Maynard, Ohio, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2006, at home (4773 State Route 151, Mingo Junction, OH 43938). He was born August 10, 1936, in Maynard, Ohio, the son of Ernest Yanssens and Emma (Moore) Yanssens.

Roger retired in 1997 as the General Secretary/Treasurer for the Transportation Communication Union System Board 86. He was also a retired Clerk for the Penn Central and Conrail Railroad.

He retired after 42 years of service (from 1954 to 1986) as a Chief Petty Officer for the United States Coast Guard Reserves.

He was a member of Saint Agnes Roman Catholic Church and the Maynard (Ohio) American Legion, was past President of the Buckeye Ruritan Club in New Alexandria, Ohio, a Fourth Degree Knight of The Knights of Columbus Council 4361 in Mingo, Ohio, a member of the P. N. A. Lodge 455, President of the P. N. A. Council 50, a member of the Steubenville Beagle Club, the Pine Valley Sportsman’s Club and the Mingo Sportsman’s Club, past President of the Maynard Sportsman’s Club, and former Coach for the Maynard baseball.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and four wheelerA’s and was a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jeannette (Garczyk) Yanssens, whom he married February 27, 1960; two sons: Brian (and Gretchen) Yanssens and Roger Allen (and Sonya) Yanssens both of New Alexandria, Ohio; a daughter, Tammy Yanssens of Gahanna, Ohio; two sisters: Nancy Moore of St. Clairsville, Ohio, and Karma Sica of Akron, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Jo (and Richard) Orr of St. Clairsville, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Joe Garczyk, of St. Clairsville, Ohio; three granddaughters: Allison, Abigail and Adrienne; and many much-loved nieces and nephews.

Friends were received on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received today (Monday, October 9) from 12 noon until 9 p.m. at the WHEELER FUNERAL HOME, 712 Third Street, Brilliant, Ohio 43913 (740-598-4191).

Roger will lie in state on Tuesday, October 10, in SAINT AGNES ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, Mingo, Ohio, from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father James M. Dunfee as Celebrant.

Interment will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens in Pleasant Grove, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to his granddaughters’ scholarship fund.

The Knights of Columbus Rosary Service was held in the Funeral Home on Sunday at 8:45 p.m.

Today, there will be a P. N. A. Service at 3 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be held at 8:45 p.m., both in the Funeral Home.
