Woman misses court date

A Greene County woman who pleaded guilty to charges that she drove the getaway car in a 2005 theft of a donation box from a local restaurant, failed to appear for sentencing in Fayette County Court Friday because she was incarcerated in a Waynesburg prison. According to Fayette County District Attorney Nancy D. Vernon, Mary E. Landman, 40, of Greensboro was arrested in Greene County for violating terms of her probation and was sentenced to 90 days in prison.

Landman was scheduled to be sentenced on charges of criminal conspiracy to commit theft and receiving stolen property for her involvement in the theft from Panera Bread in South Union Township, according to court records.

Landman was one of three people allegedly involved in the theft of donations that were to benefit Alexandra Schaney, a 6-year-old with a rare form of cancer that attacks the nervous system.

Earlier this year, Douglas Lee Gump, 19, of Greensboro pleaded guilty to theft by unlawful taking, conspiracy to commit theft and receiving stolen property for allegedly stealing the box. He was sentenced to four to 24 months in prison. Gump’s uncle, Richard L. Gump, faces identical charges. However, he has pleaded not guilty in the matter and faces trial. After Douglas Gump stole the donation box, state police allege the three used the box to collect money door-to-door in Greene County.

The box contained about $90 when it was stolen.

Landman’s attorney, Thomas W. Shaffer, said that she had a crack cocaine problem at the time of the theft, and the three used money they stole to buy drugs.

On Friday, Fayette County Judge Gerald R. Solomon ordered Landman transported to the Fayette County Prison for sentencing Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
