Brownsville School Area District to up security measures

By Amanda Clegg 1 min read

BROWNSVILLE – The Brownsville Area School District Board of Directors plan to change policy to create a safer learning environment for the district students. At their planning meeting Monday evening, the board discussed changing policy to limit who can and cannot enter school buildings and installing intercom buzzer systems at the elementary schools. President Rocky Brashear said the board plans to “tighten security” at all the schools in the district.

“This may not sit well with parents, but we’re going to do what it takes to keep the kids safe,” he said. “With all the things that happen in this country we don’t want our kids to be victims of that.”

Brashear said one change is to keep Halloween parties inside, eliminating Halloween parades held at the elementary schools.

Such measurers are for the “children’s protection,” he said, adding that the board wishes to add more security cameras at the schools. Making the schools more secure also calls for updating the Emergency Response Handbook, he noted.

The board is scheduled to meet for their regular session Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at Hiller Elementary School.
