JEFFERSON – The Jefferson-Morgan School Board hired a kindergarten teacher and three other employees Monday. The board hired Tammi Byers as a kindergarten teacher at an annual salary of $34,266. By hiring Byers, the district will now have four kindergarten teachers at the elementary school.

Superintendent Donna Furnier said the school district used to have four kindergarten classes but decided to cut back to three classes this year. However, she said enrollment was higher than expected and a fourth classroom was needed.

Furnier said they have currently 61 students enrolled in kindergarten.

Having four classrooms will decrease class size to about 15 students per room, she explained.

As for other hires, the board Dana Bradmon as assistant high school band director at an annual salary of $28,305.

The board also voted to hire Rhonda Hiller as a personal aide at $10.65 an hour and Todd Siebert as high school varsity wrestling coach at an annual salary of $2,400.

As for other matters, the board approved Diana L. Jobes as a substitute teacher in the school district and gave their approval collectively to have Tracy Hutchinson, William Davis and Michelle Howard added to the substitute teacher list.

The board also added Thomas Hoy to the substitute custodial list for the 2006-07 school year.

In addition, the board appointed Bo Montibeller as a community volunteer to keep the weight room in the field house open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

In an unrelated matter, the board gave approval to have students in fourth through eighth grades complete a questionnaire on bullying issues.

Middle school principal Carol Korber said the questionnaire should take about two class periods to complete.

Furnier referred to the survey as an “awareness tool” that will benefit both teachers and students.

The board also conducted the following business:

– Renewed a SurfControl Internet Content Filtering Technology package at a cost of $2,623.

– Exonerated the per capita tax in the amount of $4.90 for both Donald DeAngelis and Ronald DeAngelis.

– Announced the district is working to make all schools more secure in response to recent events.

The next board meeting will be held at 7 p.m., following a 6:30 p.m. work session, Nov. 20, in the elementary school library.
