Fire at Markleysburg home accidental

1 min read

A fire that heavily damaged the second floor of a Markelysburg home appears to have started accidentally, possibly at a first-floor wood-burner, said Markleysburg Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ed Hoffman. Volunteer firefighters from Fayette and Somerset counties as well as Bruceton Mills, W.Va., responded to the 1 p.m. alarm at Albert Dellinger’s house at 462 Flat Rock Road.

Hoffman said Dellinger and his wife were home at the time and managed to escape uninjured.

Firefighters got the fire under control in about a half hour, but remained at the scene for about two and a half hours, Hoffman said.

He said the fire traveled through a wall to a second-floor bathroom “where it really took off.”

The first floor had smoke and water damage.

Although the cause remains under investigation, it appears to be accidental, Hoffman said.

Along with Markelysburg, fire departments from Farmington, Ohiopyle, North Union Township and Hopwood responded to the fire. The Addison and Confluence volunteer fire departments responded from Somerset County.
