Uniontown police probe burglary

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

Uniontown police are investigating a burglary at a home on Wednesday afternoon. Police Detective Donald “Butch” Gmitter said police are looking for as many as four suspects that broke into the 67 Collins Ave. home of Janell Harris of Uniontown just after 5 p.m.

Gmitter said that several rooms in the home were ransacked and a side door was kicked in and investigators speculated that the intruders appeared to be searching for something specific.

Harris was not home at the time, police said.

A neighbor told police that she heard a disturbance at the home and saw a man with a black book bag get into a blue van and flee the scene.

It was not immediately known what was stolen from the home, police said, and several video surveillance cameras on the house were not recording when the break-in occurred.

Through eyewitness descriptions of the van and a reported theft of a similar van only minutes before the burglary from Uniontown resident George Wardell, police quickly located the minivan at the top of Varndell Street.

The van, which was still running, had a broken ignition column and was identified by police as the van stolen from Wardell, police said. The vehicle had been parked on Shady Lane when it was stolen, police said.

No suspects were found at the scene but another eyewitness, Amos Oliver of Uniontown, said four men exited the van and got into a dark-colored Chevrolet Blazer and fled the scene, Gmitter said.

Oliver told police that one of the men was carrying a black book bag when he switched vehicles, police said. Gmitter said police will examine the van for further evidence.

Anyone with information is asked to call Uniontown police at 724-430-2929.
