Fire destroys home, kills pets

REDSTONE TWP. – One dog and two cats died when a fire broke out in a Grindstone home early Sunday afternoon, but no people were injured. Chief Rich Lenk of Grindstone Volunteer Fire Department said the 11:03 a.m. blaze destroyed the Lyndale Road residence.

According to Lenk, the house was being rented by a man who was home at the time. Lenk said the unidentified man was sleeping when the fire broke out, but was awoken by a loud bang.

The man was able to escape without injury, Lenk said.

Several local fire departments with tanker trucks were called for assistance after a water main broke while crews were fighting the blaze.

Lenk said water from pumper trucks belonging to Grindstone, North Brownsville and South Brownsville volunteer fire departments were used to keep the fire at bay until the tanker trucks arrived.

“The break hampered us for a little bit,” Lenk said. “But we were able to knock the fire down pretty quick with water from the pumper trucks.”

Lenk said crews had the fire under control about half an hour, but that firefighters were on scene until about 1:30 p.m.

The fire marshal was on scene investigating, Lenk said, noting that the cause is believed to be electrical.

In addition to Grindstone, North Brownsville and South Brownsville, volunteer fire departments from Republic, Allison 2, Smock, California, Fayette City, Tower Hill and Washington Township also responded, as did Fayette EMS.
