Man acquitted in theft case
A Greene County jury acquitted a Waynesburg man Thursday of most of the charges filed against him in the theft of scrap metal and rolls of conveyor belt from Consol’s Enlow Fork Mine in Richhill Township between May 1999 and February 2002. Dallas James Croasmun, 53, was acquitted of five felony counts of theft and three felony counts of conspiracy to commit theft, but he was found guilty of one count of conspiracy stemming from the removal of a belt on Feb. 21, 2002, said Greene County District Attorney Marjorie J. Fox.
State police initially charged Croasmun with a total of 58 theft and conspiracy charges, but most were dismissed at his 2002 preliminary hearing and his first trail in 2003.
He was convicted of five counts each of theft and conspiracy relative to the theft of mine belt material at his first trial, but he appealed the conviction to Superior Court, which granted him a new trial in December, Fox said.
Common Pleas Court Judge H. Terry Grimes presided over the new trial, which concluded Thursday.
Grimes deferred sentencing pending completion of a pre-sentence investigation.
Two other people were charged as co-defendants, but the disposition of their cases is not available.
