Students earn college credits
PERRYOPOLIS – Junior and senior students at Frazier High School are receiving the opportunity to earn college credit at local community colleges and universities with the help of $67,000 in funding issued through Gov. Ed. Rendell. The funding is part of Rendell’s $8 million dual enrollment program with Frazier being one of 313 high schools in 59 counties throughout the state to receive a portion of the grant that was increased this year by $3 million.
Donald Martin, high school principal, spoke to members of the Frazier School Board this month about the program, which four students are enrolled in this year at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
Martin said he expects that number to double by the spring because of increased student interest.
According to Martin, the high school selected Penn State based on its past partnerships with the university. “It was a good match for us,” added Martin.
At Martin’s request, the board also agreed to change arrival and departure times for students under its co-curricular policy to coincide with the student handbook that prohibits students to take part in such activities if they arrive after 8:05 a.m. instead of 8:15 a.m. or are dismissed early from school without proper documentation provided to school officials.
The board also conducted the following business:
– Approved the use of the middle school computer lab for a course on Introduction to Excel taught by Jim Natale, middle school teacher. The course will be held on Tuesday’s from 6 to 9 p.m. through Nov. 21 at a cost of $50 pending an enrollment of 10 people or more.
– Agreed to establish the position of secondary gifted sponsor to be paid at the contractual hourly rate of pay for competitions and activities after school and on weekends with overnight trips at the same rate not to exceed 16 hours per day.
– Agreed to hire Rachel McFall-Jeffries to serve as a long-term substitute until the start of the 2007-2008 school year at $100 per day with no benefits.
– Hired Patricia Persichetti for an eight-hour cafeteria position.
– Hired Brooke Carson as head volleyball coach for the middle school volleyball team.
– Accepted the resignation of Larry Miksell, learning support teacher and senior class sponsor effective Oct. 30.
