Alex Kenneth Volek

Alex Kenneth Volek, 79, of McClellandtown, Pa., died Wednesday, October 25, 2006, in the Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. with his family at his side. Born August 27, 1927, in Bessemer, Pa., he was a son of the late John A. and Violet Martin Volek.

A Federal Mine Inspector, he worked for the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration for 17 years, followed by four years in the Federal Assessment Office in Uniontown, Pa. He was Catholic by faith, a United States Navy veteran of World War II, having served with the Seabees in the South Pacific, a member of the U.M.W.A., and the American Legion, Post 423 in Masontown. He helped to organize the Knights of Columbus in both Fairchance and Point Marion, and was a member in New Lexington, Ohio.

Alex was well known in the area for his musical talent, especially with the saxophone and accordion, and for over 40 years led his own bands, the Dreamweavers and Tempos.

He is survived by his wife, whom he dearly loved, Sylvia Carrick Fedor Volek, his four beloved children and their spouses: Alexander and Lisa Volek of Point Marion, Pa., Linda and Bob Sharpnack of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mary and Elzie Lavery of Point Marion, R.D., and Alexis and Victor Bouillon of Chillicothe, Ohio; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, John and Nancy Volek of Point Marion, R.D., and Lenny and Candi Volek of Uniontown; and a sister, Dolores Beck of Merrittstown, Pa.

His first wife, Audrey E. Volek, passed away on October 5, 2003. Also deceased is a son in infancy, and two brothers, Harold and Carold.

Friends will be received in the RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, Pa., on Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held at 8 p.m. in the funeral home with Father Joseph Sredzinski officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in ALL SAINT’S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, Masontown, Pa., on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father John Butler as Celebrant.

Interment Services will be held Saturday, November 4, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the Greendale Cemetery, Masontown, with Military Rites accorded at the graveside by the American Legion, Post 423.
