Herman Gilbert Ficks
Herman Gilbert Ficks, 87, of Uniontown, Pa., died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, in Uniontown Hospital. He was born November 8, 1918, in Uniontown, Pa., the son of the late Abraham and Rose (Rutkin) Ficks.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline L. (Miller) Ficks in 1993, a daughter, Alexis Ficks Welsh and a brother, Henry Ficks.
Herman received an Accounting Degree from Penn State University and through the Army attended Harvard University for postgraduate training.
Herman served in World War II overseas in Europe as a Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corp.
Following the war, Herman returned to Uniontown, where he and his brother Henry started the Ficks Sales Co., wholesale toy distributors, which grew and thrived for over 30 years.
Herman and his family were members of Temple Israel and spent many fun filed days at the Jewish Community Center swimming, picnicking and being with friends.
Herman was a life member of the Uniontown Elks 370, and later in life also enjoyed many years as a member of the Uniontown Country Club where he socialized playing golf and cards. An avid sports enthusiast, Herman followed high school, college and professional sports teams throughout the year.
On the streets of Uniontown, he was well known and a friend to many.
Surviving are a son, Steven J. Ficks of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a daughter, Terri Sterzinger and husband, Ralph of Gibsonia, Pa.; grandchildren: Erica Sterzinger Schohn and Ryan Sterzinger.
Friends will be received in the J. HARRY JOHNSTON FUNERAL HOME, 65 North Gallatin Avenue, Uniontown, Pa., on Sunday, September 3, 2006, from 9 to 10 a.m., the hour of Service with Rabbi David officiating.
Interment will follow in Hebrew Cemetery Association, Hopwood, Pa.
