Things to ponder, Sept. 9
From the windmill of my mind … Strange things happen behind the scenes. A woman called the paper 5:15 p.m. Tuesday to say that her military veteran father did not write a letter to the editor supporting a well-known person, after our receptionist had called her house seeking confirmation. An hour or so later, she called back to say that while she initially thought there was “no way” her 85-year-old Dad would have done so, after checking with him she found out he had indeed sent in a letter.
There are still good people in this world, as evidenced by my experience at Smithfield State Bank in Uniontown this week. Shortly after I made a transaction and left the bank, the teller called my home answering machine asking that I return the call. When I did, she said that a customer in line after me found some cash on the floor, and she wanted to know if I had lost any money. I then realized that I had placed a wad of several $1 bills in an unbuttoned front pocket of a heavy overshirt I was carrying that day in case it got cold later. That’s exactly what had been found, and the teller held it for me for a day until I could get back to the bank. Thanks, Lynn, and thanks to the person who gave you the money.
I saw a real Vietnam veteran (defined as one who was actually in-country) collecting contributions in front of Wal-Mart last weekend, and he said, “I’m with you in what you’re doing at the paper.” This guy and I go back a long time, to when I was one of the first reporters here to write about the significant contributions and plights of our Vietnam veterans. He said, “What someone may have done in the service and what he’s done in politics are two different things.” Amen, brother.
I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of our state legislators using our tax money to grease the skids for their re-election campaigns. They send out “informational” brochures, film so-called “public service announcements” and otherwise squander our money in what amounts to nothing more than political propaganda.
Want to guess whose name is on the medals handed out to 400 World War II and Korean War veterans by the incumbent legislator in the 50th District? No, it’s not that of the individual veteran, or even Gen. George C. Marshall, which leaves …
The Mon-Fayette Expressway can’t be finished soon enough, but without water and sewerage lines in place there will be no economic or residential growth.
Hey, wasn’t Lee Harvey Oswald a former Marine, too? Does that mean he shouldn’t be criticized for shooting President John F. Kennedy, or that you’d unquestioningly support him if he ran for public office? Just asking.
