National Road group plans fund-raising dinner
The National Road Heritage Corridor will host a fund-raiser on Sept. 21, a “Frontier Dinner,’ in the vineyard at Christian Klay Winery in Farmington. “It’s going to be all wild game prepared like it was in the 1800s,’ said Donna Holdorf, executive director of the heritage corridor. “Joe Carei will be doing the food and he’s roasting the vegetables in the ground.’
Award-winning chef Joe Carei, owner of Caleigh’s Restaurant in Uniontown, will prepare the dinner, which includes spring greens with cranberries and nuts, venison, duck sausage and wild turkey, fire-roasted vegetables, sweet potatoes, hearty breads and cheeses and one of Carei’s gourmet desserts. Wine and beer are included. Hors d’oeuvres are served at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner begins at 6:15 p.m.
Holdorf reported that Fred Adams will perform music and there will be a silent auction that will include a guided fly-fishing trip.
“It’s going to be a fun evening,’ she said. “There will be no speeches. The wine is from Christian Klay Winery and Klafter’s Inc. will provide anyone who wants a cigar.’
Proceeds from the dinner will help the National Road carry out its mission.
“Our focus from the new management action plan is on education from school-age children to local residents on the National Road – what it was and why it’s important,’ said Holdorf. “And we’ll continue work in small community projects like the Hopwood Village Project on streetscape.’
She said, “Our long-term goal in 10 years is to educate the region about the National Road and things that happened along it that influenced the growth of our nation.’
In addition, the heritage corridor is now forming a heritage council and is looking for interested participants. They include people interested in history, historic and natural preservation and economic development.
The heritage council meets four times a year and is an arm of the National Road Heritage Corridor Board. Holdorf called it “a think tank to meet with the board and help move concepts forward.’
