Dunbar agrees to hire police officers

By Jackie Beranek 2 min read

DUNBAR – Borough Council agreed Monday to hire three new part-time police officers. Council President John Maddas said Stephen Melchrone of Murrysville, Michael Ivan of Connellsville and Ronald Depellegrin of Delmont would begin their duties soon.

Maddas said Police Chief Mike Garlowich has been providing most of the police protection over the past couple of months because the borough was short on help.

Maddas additionally said that the Dunbar police would provide full coverage during the upcoming Dunbar Community Fest slated for Sept. 30.

In other unrelated matters, council:

– Learned that budget talks would begin Sept 28 at 6 p.m. A second budget meeting has been scheduled for Oct. 2 at 6 p.m.

– Agreed that the annual Halloween parade would be held on Oct. 29 from 3 to 4 p.m. Councilwoman Kathy Dynes said anyone interested in entering a float in the parade should contact the borough secretary. Trick or Treat will be held following the parade from 4 to 5 p.m.

– Dynes also reported that $4,054.68 was spent on pest control, an air conditioner, work at the Dunbar Public Library and at the Veteran’s apartments. Dynes said two eviction notices were issued and one person contacted the borough to make arrangements for a payment plan on an apartment.

– Agreed to purchase a new curfew whistle with an automatic switch. Residents have complained in the past that children in town didn’t know the time of the curfew, which is 9:45 p.m. in the summer.

– Dynes reported that inspection at the park was completed on Sept. 14. She said that everything went off without a hitch.

Dynes told council that construction work on the Dunbar portion of the Sheepskin Trail should begin in the spring of 2007 and be completed sometime in 2008.

– Agreed to have solicitor Doug Sepic advertise a proposed ordinance that would require anyone planning to put a mobile home on property in the borough to install a full ring foundation. Councilman Ron Gross said the full ring foundation makes the mobile home a little more permanent and much more secure.
