Domestic Violence Awareness Month rally set

By Jennifer Harr 2 min read

In line with October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a local agency is planning events to bring consciousness to the abuse suffered silently by women across the country. Those who have lost someone to domestic violence or survivors of the problem are encouraged to attend a rally Oct. 2 sponsored by Fayette County Domestic Violence Services.

Cathleen Augustine, community services educator with Fayette County Domestic Violence Services, said a ceremony on the steps of the county courthouse will start at 11 a.m., and will include the lighting of a candle for victims who have died as a result of domestic violence.

“We are also reaching out to individuals who want to attend to read names or help light the candle if they have a family member who was a victim of domestic violence or they were themselves,” Augustine said.

After the morning ceremony, Augustine said everyone will head to the chamber building in downtown Uniontown for refreshments from 1 to 2 p.m.

Augustine said the agency will highlight domestic violence month with a number of activities, including a continuing volunteer drive to keep the agency staffed with caring people. She said training sessions will be offered every Wednesday, throughout the day, so that people can make their own time to come and get training to help the victims who come into the shelter.

And on Oct. 7, Domestic Violence Services will hold a cash bash at the American Legion on Gallatin Avenue in Uniontown.

On Oct. 16, Augustine said the agency would hold training for business owners who may come into contact with domestic violence victims. From 1 to 2 p.m., Augustine said she hopes shop owners from all walks of life come to hear about what they can do to help support and guide victims into a an environment where they can get help.
