Redstone plans cleanup through October
REDSTONE – A township-wide cleanup is being held throughout October as part of the contract between Redstone Township and Thunder Valley Sanitation. According to Ralph Rice, chairman of the supervisors, Thunder Valley will pick up furniture and other large items by appointment only throughout October. The cleanup days are free.
“They must call Thunder Valley Sanitation and they will be given a date for pickup,” Rice said.
Thunder Valley will not accept any tires, shingles or other hard-to-recycle items. To schedule a pickup, Redstone residents should call Thunder Valley at 724-785-6916.
Fayette County is sponsoring a hard-to-recycle event on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Wharton Township building on Route 381 in Farmington. Drop-offs will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Computer equipment can be recycled for free, as can used oil. There is a fee of $1 per tire, $5 for each tire on a rim, $2 for large steel appliances and $2 for electronic items such as microwave ovens and televisions.
The hard-to-recycle event will not accept paint cans or household hazardous waste. For more information, call 724-430-4884.
In other matters, the supervisors approved a mercantile license for Susan Lowery to operate Lowery’s Family Day Care at 602 Hill St. in Herbert. The day care will operate Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. until 6 p.m. for newborns through age 12. The service will provide breakfast, lunch, two snacks and age-appropriate instruction for the various age groups.
George Matis was named to serve on the Redstone Township Sewer Authority until January when new appointments will be made. Matis is taking the place of Dwayne Thomas, who resigned in order to take a job outside the area.
Rice said the Redstone Recreation Center will be open to the public for walking and exercise Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. starting Oct. 10.
The supervisors also voted to rename portions of two streets due to the Mon/Fayette Expressway construction, which has severed the roads. Rice said the northern end of Patterson Road, which connects to Royal Road near the Pizza Wagon, has been renamed Cora Way.
The portion of Old Royal Road that connects with Route 40 has been renamed Fox Ridge Road. Rice said the majority of the residents on the roads approved the new names.
The township’s emergency management coordinator, Frank Gadd, emphasized the importance of all residents posting their 9-1-1 street numbers on their homes for accurate emergency responses.
The county’s new voting machines will be demonstrated Thursday at the township meeting room from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Anyone with questions about how the new machines work may attend the demonstration or log onto the county’s Internet site www.fayettevotes.org, or check HSTV, cable channel 19 for a listing of dates and times of demonstrations that will be held over the next month, prior to the November election.
