Mount Pleasant Glass and Ethnic Festival starts Friday

MOUNT PLEASANT – The 20th annual Mount Pleasant Glass and Ethnic Festival will kickoff Friday with a full slate of activities. According to Chairman Jeff Landy, this year’s three-day event promises to continue the Mount Pleasant tradition of good food, a parade, shopping, contests and entertainment.

Landy said three new categories were added to this year’s lineup.

“In addition to the Little Princess, Young Miss Princess and Queen contests we will sponsor a Little Prince, Prince and King pageant,” said Landy.

Contestants must be from Mount Pleasant or be enrolled in the Mount Pleasant Area School District. Ages for the contestants are as follows: Little Princess and Little Prince, 4-6 years of age; Young Miss Princess and Prince, 9-14 years of age; and Queen and King, 15-21 years of age.

A baby contest will be held for babies no older than 12 months as of Sept. 1, who live in Mount Pleasant or the school district and a Kid’s Great Train Race for ages 4-8 and a scavenger hunt for all ages will additionally be held.

Kidsfest will be held on Sunday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the festival where sponsors have set up crafts for the little ones. There are games and activities and lots to do, according to Landy.

The festival will be held rain or shine and the annual parade will be held on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. on Main Street.

Friday’s Sony stage events include the Wild World of Animals, Buffo The World’s Strongest Clown, the Beauty Make Over Show, Darlynn School of Dance, Battle of the Singers and George Lucas. Saturday’s events include Mike Garrison (country band), Kellie Lynne (country), Danceworks by Melanie and rock group Switch.

The Treltones polka band will lead off Sunday’s Sony events followed by the Battle of the Best contest, Battle of the Singers final and Neon Swing X-Perience swing band.

Friday’s Washington Street stage events will kick off with the Kids Great Train race followed by a scavenger hunt, Buffo the World’s Strongest Clown, Tim Scott Rock and Blues Band and Midnight Run (new country). Variety band Brass Impact will kick off Saturday’s events followed by North Star Kids of Pittsburgh, a scavenger hunt, Battle of the Singers II and Crazy Cowboy country band.

Sunday’s Washington Street stage events will begin with I Paesani (Italian dance) followed by Jake Zelmore Traveling Band (old time country), a scavenger hunt and rock band Punch.

Friday’s gazebo events will begin with the Festival Wedding uniting Nadine Godzin and Kerry Ord. The Little Princes Contest will follow and Foghat, a classic rock band will round out the evening.

Saturday’s gazebo events will begin with the Queen, King and Young Miss Princess Contest followed by the Joe Marotta Festa Variety Show, Bill Haley’s Comets and the Vogues.

Sunday will kick off with the baby stroller parade followed by an Ethnic Dance Show featuring The Golden Triangle Jr. Tambaritizans and the Povertyneck Hillbillies.

Festival Midway events will include strolling puppets, bag piper Joel Adams, Egidio Faiella, American Italian mandolin player, Rock and Roll Pet Store Kids and Meatball the small pony.

Landy said people with festival shirts will be walking around and answering questions. He additionally said that no bicycles, skateboards, two wheeled scooters or any animals, except seeing eye dogs, would be permitted at the festival.
