Arts in the City festival set for Sunday
The Downtown Uniontown Business District Authority will hold the third Arts in the City festival from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The event is located on Main Street in Uniontown. It will feature 55 artists and craftsmen and four demonstrators from Touchstone Center for the Crafts in Farmington.
A demonstration tent located at the corner of Main Street and Beeson Boulevard will feature four artists from Touchstone Center for Crafts.
Featured will be Chris Graber, potter; Carol Pickerine, felter; Susan Sailing, nature prints. Darrell Smith of Brownsville, who carves violins and guitars, also will be featured at the Touchstone booth.
Touchstone is a unique three-season crafts school, which was founded in 1972 as Pioneer Craft Council. Touchstone’s original mission was to foster interest in the preservation of traditional mountain crafts.
Today, this unique craft school has expanded to include contemporary and experimental techniques in addition to traditional and historic methods in disciplines such as blacksmithing, ceramics, metals, textiles, glass, oil and watercolor painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. As Pennsylvania’s only residential craft school, Touchstone offers both beginner and seasoned artists more than 100 week-long and weekend courses.
Another addition to the third Arts in the City is a production by Ballet LaFayette performing at the State Theatre.
The Children’s Art Zone located at the corner of North Beeson Boulevard and Main Street and sponsored by ABC Schoolhouse and Creation Station provides a hands-on experience for young children attending the festival.
Bev DeMotte, a teacher at Uniontown High School, returns this year to supervise the activities, which are free. Children’s Zone activities, geared toward preschool to upper elementary aged children, will include the perennial favorite, spin art, chalk art, and this year’s special cookie decorating event sponsored by Eat ‘N Park Restaurant.
The entertainment scheduled is from blues to ballet.
Food booths will be located in the 911 parking lot located between South and Main Street. Parking is free in the parking garage, located on Church Street.
