Oct. 19 poverty summit to focus on findings of noted author, educator
A regional poverty summit targeting Fayette, Westmoreland and Washington counties will focus on the findings of author and educator Dr. Ruby K. Payne in her book, “A Framework for Understanding Poverty.” The training facilitated by Communities In Schools of Southwest PA Inc. and America’s Promise Alliance will take place from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Willow Room in Belle Vernon. There is a cost, which will include a continental breakfast and lunch.
All participants must pre-register no later than Oct. 4 by calling Communities In Schools at 724-437-2540.
For educators attending the workshop, seven hours of Act 48 credits will be available.
The topic of “Framework for Poverty” will offer business, government, educators and community leaders the opportunity to understand how economic class affects behaviors and mindset, learn the hidden rules within economic classes and understand methods to improve interventions, strategies and techniques for effective interactions.
The presenter of the training, career educator and consultant Jim Littlejohn, is the president of PEACE Skills Inc. and presents training in the areas of conflict and anger management, classroom management, peer mediation, inter-personal relations, brain-based learning and school crisis management. South Carolina’s governor has named Littlejohn a “Hero for Children.”
Littlejohn’s breakthrough trainings provide participants with practical, real-world support and guidance to improve effectiveness in dealing with individuals from all socioeconomic backgrounds.
Participants also will have the opportunity to network with sponsoring organizations including Fayette County Community Action Agency, Private Industry of Westmoreland-Fayette, Fay-Penn Economic Development REACH Initiative, Mon Valley Health & Welfare Authority, The Herald-Standard, Westmoreland Human Opportunities Inc. and Communities In Schools of PA Inc.
