Section of turnpike to close

1 min read

The westbound side of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76/Interstate 70) between New Stanton and Irwin will be closed for about 5.5 hours, starting at midnight Saturday, so that crews can set concrete beams for a new overhead bridge to carry Madison Road over the turnpike at milepost 72.5. Westbound traffic will be forced to exit at New Stanton (milepost 75.5) during the closure. Irwin is the closest point to make re-entry to I-76 west. The area of closure is in Westmoreland County, southeast of Pittsburgh. Eastbound traffic will not be affected.

Information on alternative westerly routes around the construction site will be available from fare collectors at the New Stanton interchange. Message boards and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) broadcasts also will be utilized to convey pertinent information to westbound drivers.

The simplest and most appropriate detour for most vehicles, especially trucks, will be turnpike Route 66 north to Route 30 west to I-76 west at Irwin.

Arona Road, another option, runs parallel to the turnpike part of the way between New Stanton and Irwin.

The westbound lanes of the turnpike are expected to reopen by 5:30 am Sunday, Sept. 24.
