Virgil J. Harris
Virgil J. Harris, 83, of Point Marion, Pa., died Wednesday, September 20, 2006, in his home. Born November 4, 1922, in Salem, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Joseph and Nettie Brand Harris.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, he was involved in three major battles in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 747 and the American Legion, Post 499 both in Point Marion.
He was a brilliant man and studied as an abstract artist, was an inventor holding several United States Patents and had trained his cat “Cattie” to do a number of tricks, which they performed on the David Letterman Show.
Mr. Harris worked for a while as a barber and for many years, until his death, was a traveling salesman of advertising goods and novelties all over the area.
He is survived by a sister, Hazel Christian of Seattle, Washington; two nieces: Jane Miller and Debbie Carton of Washington; a cousin, Patty Mylie of Star City, West Virginia; his dear friend for many years, Eva Canney of Staten Island, New York; and by his close friends and caregivers who helped look after him in his declining years, Archie and Ina Moats of Haydentown, Pa. and their family.
Friends will be received in the RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, Pa., this evening from 7 to 9 p.m., Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Monday until 11 a.m. the hour of Service.
Interment will follow in the Little Arlington Section of Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion, Pa., with Military Rites accorded at the graveside by the Point Marion Veterans Posts.
