Cal U hosts Family Day

3 min read

The 28th Annual California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U) Family Day will take place Saturday with many exciting events. Formerly known as Parents Day, the Family Day tradition started in 1978 as an event to give family members the opportunity to visit the campus and develop a sense of the physical and educational environment students are immersed in.

As always, visiting families will be given the opportunity to choose from a variety of enjoyable activities that will take place throughout the Natali Student Center, the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Biological Sciences Building and the Herron Recreation and Fitness Center.

At 11:30 a.m., a Phase IV Housing dedication ceremony will occur in front of the Natali Student Center. This fall, two resident halls opened, giving Cal U five new, state-of-the-art, on-campus residence halls since the fall of 2004.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., student ambassadors will welcome families to campus in front of the Natali Student Center, while the Family Day Brunch will run during the same hours in the student center’s Gold Rush Room.

Included among the many on-campus events are guided tours of the Cal U campus, including the radio, television and newspaper centers, free movies and health information. The Kid Zone will provide fun for children with games, entertainment, face painting, balloon animals and much more.

The Family Day will also give families the opportunity to take family photos in costumes from another era, become a weatherman for a day and walk away with a free DVD of your own broadcast performed in the campus’ state-of-the-art Weather Center.

Follow the day with dinner with Cal U President Angelo Armenti Jr. and his wife, Barbara, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Performance Center of the Natali Student Center.

Complimentary T-shirts will be distributed by the PSECU, the state’s largest credit union, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Natali Student Center lobby. The Cal U bookstore, also located in the student center, will offer free giveaways from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Two of Cal U’s NCAA varsity athletic teams will be in action at home on this day.

At Adamson Stadium at 6 p.m., the Vulcan football team, defending PSAC-West champions, will open divisional play by hosting PSAC-West rival, Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, and the university’s women’s soccer team will host conference opponent Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 1 p.m. at Roadman Park.

“There truly is something for everyone on this day’s busy schedule,” said President Armenti. “We welcome everyone to spend the day at California University, visit our new residence halls and help cheer on our football team against Lock Haven that night.

“At California University, students are not numbers on a roster, but individuals,” Armenti continued. “Family Day is an opportunity for family and friends to see where their student spends a lot of his or her time. This truly is an amazing day.”
