Taking Back Sunday – Louder Now

By Clint Rhodes 2 min read

Out of coffee? The third album from this power-pop band combines angst-ridden and heart-pounding tunes that will satisfy your caffeine fix - without a trip to Starbucks. The dueling vocals between Adam Lazzara and Fred Mascherino are an audio treat for the ears, as they spar with each other waiting to deliver the knock out punch. Out of coffee? At times the band sounds like an edgier version of the Marvelous 3, with a slick sound provided by Queens of the Stone Age producer Eric Valentine. The opening track explodes with “What’s It Feel Like to Be a Ghost?” as it nearly spins out of control. It’s difficult to resist the urge to raise the volume in order to feel the full intensity of this guitar-driven gem. The boisterous “Liar” follows with more of the same pounding guitar riffs and sweeping vocals. Other winners include “Twenty-Twenty Surgery” and the catchy “Miami.”

There is really nothing new here – just straightforward rock music made loud, to be played loud. And that ain’t a bad thing at all. The buzz from Louder Now will linger longer and be more satisfying than the jolt you receive from your morning coffee. Skip the cream and sugar and go pure rock & roll.
