Authorities probe middle school bomb threat
Authorities are investigating another bomb threat found in the boy’s restroom at the Laurel Highlands Middle School around 2 p.m. Monday. School district Superintendent Ronald Sheba said the school will be searched and cleared by a bomb-sniffing dog and law enforcement officials before classes begin today.
The school was under lockdown Monday night.
Sheba said the school was not evacuated Monday because the bomb threat was found at the end of school day as children were leaving.
Middle school principal Mary Macar said the bathroom was locked after the threat was found inside. Macar said she and another employee initially searched the building and found nothing.
Sheba said school officials are relatively sure the bomb threat was a prank but said all necessary precautions are being taken.
The school district has received bomb threats in the past.
Most recently, the middle school was evacuated April 19 when a bomb threat was found in a different boy’s bathroom, Macar said.
Since then, Macar said employees have been checking for threats regularly.
School officials are reviewing digital video footage of students going in and out of the bathroom during the time the threat was left, Sheba said.
Sheba said there are several suspects, noting that state police will handle investigation.
A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the person or people making the threats, Sheba said.
The school district, according to Sheba, will prosecute any and all individuals believed to have left any of the recent bomb threats to the fullest extent of the law.
“We’re tired of this, and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.
