Announcements THE 111TH FAYETTE COUNTY SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION will be held May 4-5 in the Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 30 Church St., Smithfield, with the theme “Be a Doer of the Word.’ Featured speaker will be the Rev. John Cook, program director of Rankin Christian Center in Braddock, Pa. Cook also pastors Victory Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Morehouse College in Atlanta and a master of divinity degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y. Cook is executive secretary of Allegheny Union Baptist Association, president of the board of directors of Western Manor, as well as a board member of Primary Health Care Systems and Hill House Economic Development Corp. The choir from First Baptist Church in Fairchance will present special music Friday evening and the Mount Moriah Baptist Church Choir on Saturday evening. There will be a banquet Saturday at 5 p.m. and special music presented by 11-year-old Micah High playing the violin. The services are open to the public. The Fayette County Sunday School Association recently hosted a PEP-Plus Contest in conjunction with the state association. ANTIOCH BAPTIST CHURCH, Edenborn, will observe the 94th church anniversary on Sunday. ASBURY UNITED METHO-DIST CHURCH, corner of Beeson Avenue and Dunbar Street in Uniontown, announces Asbury Music Ministry presents Pepper Choplin in a solo performance, utilizing musical storytelling based on his compositions, followed by the Asbury Festival Choir, St. Paul’s Lutheran Choir and other guest singers performing anthems composed by Choplin. The church will also premier a commissioned work based on its sanctuary windows that Choplin wrote for Asbury. A reception follows the free concert.
Sunday’s more casual 9 a.m. worship service will include the Rev. Thomas E. Brown’s message “You Can’t Capture God’ and praise choruses led by song leader Barb Cruse and special music by pianist Sharon Brown. The more traditional 11 a.m. service will include the message by Brown and special music by the Asbury Chancel Choir and Jim Hutchinson, organist and director of music. Praise and worship service is at 6:30 p.m. with a message by Gordon Turk and music by the Asbury Praise Band with Kevin Milliken, Paul and Barb Cramer, Paul Chiado, Ira Fox and Bert Sesler. A light meal and fellowship is at 6 p.m. Turk will present an organ recital at 7:30 p.m. with a reception following. A critically acclaimed concert organist, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He was winner of the John Cerevalo Prize for “Excellence in the performance of music of J.S. Bach’ and has been a prizewinner in the national improvisation competition of the American Guild of Organists. He previously performed at Asbury in October 2002.

Mrs. Ireland is a physical therapist and has a master’s degree in public health. In Zambia, almost one in six of its 11 million citizens are HIV positive and 75 percent live on less than $1 a day. MASONTOWN COMMUNITY KITCHEN will serve its bi-weekly meal on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. in Masontown First Presbyterian Church, 102 W. Church St. The menu will be chicken salad sandwiches, pasta salad, Panera breads, desserts and beverages. The community is requested to invite someone they may know who is in need of a meal and fellowship. There is no charge for the meal, however, donations are accepted. Hospitality is provided during the meal by both the volunteers and those who attend.
The last Community Kitchen on April 17 had a new record attendance of 212 people who enjoyed a ham and chicken dinner. Officials said, “Several new volunteers helped with the serving and clean-up, which was very much appreciated by the staff. With the continued growth of the Community Kitchen, it has been determined an additional freezer is needed. An officer stated it would be a tax-deductible contribution.” He said, “Our needs seem to be met anytime something comes up. The whole function of the Community Kitchen is only possible through the generosity of the townsfolk and the grace of God.” Anyone who may consider donating or selling a freezer for a modest price should contact Kathy West at 724-966-5400 or Bettie Crable at 724-583-7464.

KLONDIKE CLERGY ASSOCIATION, representing the churches of Masontown and McClellandtown, is sponsoring the eighth annual German-Masontown CROP Walk on Sunday, May 20. Local churches, Scout groups, organizations and clubs are being invited to walk in this local effort to end hunger both locally and worldwide. The money raised goes to Church World Service, the parent organization of CROP. Twenty-five percent of the money is returned to the local community to assist local food banks address hunger needs at home. Last year, the local CROP Walk raised $5,900 and returned $1,475 to Masontown and McClellandtown food pantries. Anyone interested in participation should call the local coordinator, the Rev.
