Head Start holds literacy events
Head Start and Early Head Start of Fayette County held literacy events on April 12 in Republic and Mill Run. This year’s event theme was “Fiesta.” These events are just two of six events planned for this program year. Each year the Head Start and Early Head Start selects a book for the literacy event. Staff members plan activities based upon the books’ concepts, storylines or themes. Head Start and Early Head Start enrolled families are invited to attend the events. Families attending the events receive a copy of the book to take home. This is one of many ways the agency promotes pre-reading skills and literacy with the families.
In Republic the event was held at the Republic Volunteer Firemen’s Social Hall. More than a 100 family members of enrolled children participated in the event. The staff planned activities for the families and their children such as the duck pond, pin the tail on the donkey, fiesta music and dance, face painting, noodle necklace creations, making serapes, sombrero bowling and reading the stories “Fiesta” and “Millie Goes Shopping.” A representative from Crime Victim’s handed out information to families and our program’s nurses were present to provide hearing screens to the families. Refreshments were also served.
The Mill Run staff planned similar activities for their event including taking family photos, a fishpond, a Mexican hat dance and decorating pottery crafts the children had made previously. Yogi Bear, of Jellystone Park, one of the community representatives who attended the event, made his appearance to say hello to the children and their families. Ohiopyle also had a representative present to provide families information about the park and surrounding area. Staff from Seven Springs provided face painting for the children. Approximately 50 family members attended this event.
Additional events planned this month are: April 19 at Morrell Fire Hall, All Saints Social Hall and in Farmington at the Nemacolin Head Start site. The last event will be held on April 26 at the Head Start and Early Head Start North Union site on Coolspring Road in Uniontown. All events are from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
