Mary Jane Hartley Titus
Mary Jane Hartley Titus, age 96, of Carmichaels, Pa., passed away quietly at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2007, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, Pa. While in failing health, her death was unexpected. Mary Jane was born October 17, 1910, the eldest daughter of Edgar Minor Hartley and Sarah Ann Armstrong Hartley.
She grew up on the family farm and graduated in 1930 from Cumberland Township High School.
Prior to her marriage, she worked as a telephone operator at the former South Penn Telephone Company.
On October 12, 1938, she married Leroy Titus. He died on June 23, 1992.
Later, she worked in the Greene County Assessment Office and returned after many years as the bookkeeper for Gideon Television Sales and Service.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and puzzles and for over 50 years participated in a Sewing Circle with her close friends.
A Past Worthy Matron of the former Ideal Chapter No. 213 Order of the Eastern Star, she was an active member of the Uniontown Chapter No. 263 and was recently honored as a 58-year member of the Order.
Mary Jane was a lifelong member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School for many years, was active in the Women’s Association, served as a Circle Leader and attended services as long as her health allowed.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Howard Hartley, Noah Hartley and Oscar Hartley, two sisters, Elizabeth Keener and Laura Ely, and a grandson, Raymond Lee Bargerstock.
She is survived by her three children: Bert of Carmichaels, Arthur and his wife Mary Jo of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Ann and her husband Ken Bargerstock of Carmichaels; her daughter-in-law, Barbara of Carmichaels; her sister, Anna H. Johnson of Waynesburg, Pa.; ten grandchildren: Philip, Donald, Timothy, Melissa, Megan and Gregg Titus, Rebecca Mitchell, Pamela Bogucki, Matthew and Stacy Bargerstock; ten great-grandchildren: Kendall Corso, Jacklyn, Della, Donald and Danica Titus, Michael, Stephanie and Landon Mitchell, Joshua and Garrett Bogucki; and one great-great-granddaughter, Makenna Corso.
Friends will be received at the PAUL MICHAEL LESAKO FUNERAL HOME INC., 204 Dowlin Avenue, Carmichaels, Pa., Paul M. Lesako, Funeral Director/Owner, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, February 6, from 10 until 11 a.m., the time of the Service with the Reverend Harold O. Kelley officiating.
Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Organ Fund at the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church, 104 East Greene Street, Carmichaels, PA 15320 or to a favorite charity.
An Eastern Star Service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
