Teen killed in two-vehicle accident
FRANKLIN TWP. – A 14-year-old boy was killed in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 51 and Tippecanoe Road in Franklin Township Saturday afternoon. Fayette County Coroner Dr. Phillip E. Reilly said the boy was killed in the accident and his father was taken to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.
Two other children were taken to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Reilly said.
The accident occurred around 4:20 p.m. Seven people were involved in the crash, according to Fayette County 911, but details were not available as of press time. Witnesses said there were several children and at least one infant involved.
As emergency crews were placing the injured into several waiting ambulances, several shopping bags and a folded stroller lay scattered about the overturned Isuzu Ascender sport utility vehicle, which came to a rest on its roof in the grass between the southbound lane of Route 51 and Tippecanoe Road.
According to Fayette County 911, nine ambulances and three medical helicopters were on scene.
Flatwoods, Smock and DL&V fire departments, as well as state police in Belle Vernon, assisted.
It is not known if the weather was a factor in the accident. Drifting snow from high winds and icy roads resulted in eight to 10 accidents in the area on Saturday, Fayette County 911 said.
