Uniontown council OKs reading of ordinance amendment

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

Uniontown City Council on Wednesday approved the first reading of an ordinance amendment that would change the zoning of a lot on Coolspring Street from residential to commercial. If council approves the second reading at its March 7 meeting, the lot at the intersection of Coolspring Street and Mifflin Avenue owned by Wendell K. Charles of Uniontown would be zoned C-1, the local business district designation.

It is currently zoned R-2 for single-family or two-family dwellings.

Councilman Bob Cerjanec said the property owner is considering opening a business on the property, but did not know the type of business.

Charles could not be reached for comment.

Council approved the first reading of another ordinance amendment that would increase the number of members who serve on the recreation board from seven to nine.

The existing board requested the additional members to help the board operate more efficiently and effectively.

In unrelated business, council accepted the low bid of $15,500 from Approved Fire Protection of Greensburg to design and install a fire sprinkler system in the State Theatre Center for the Arts and the connected Union Trust Building.

The city is using a $365,00 state grant to pay for renovations that also include connecting the first floors of the theater and Union Trust Building. Council previously accepted bids for general construction, plumbing, electrical work and interior demolition.

In another matter, Giachetti said the state Department of Labor and Industry informed the city that its workplace safety committee certification has been approved, earning the city a 5 percent discount on its workers’ compensation insurance premium.

In other business, council:

– Reappointed Susanne Shearer as the health office at a salary of $10,200.

– Appointed Charles Coldren to the recreation board. His term ends on Jan. 1, 2012.
