Former lawmaker hired as internal adviser to Democrats

By Alison Hawkes For The 2 min read

HARRISBURG – House Democrats have hired former Lawrence County Rep. Frank LaGrotta as an internal adviser, but would not give any details on his employment. LaGrotta, a 20-year lawmaker who lost in the May primary, is advising the 27 freshmen Democrats in office set-up and staffing and “assisting other members as necessary,” said Tom Andrews, spokesman for House Democratic Leader H. William DeWeese, D-Waynesburg.

Andrews, however, refused to clarify the duration of LaGrotta’s employment, his pay or whether he’s entitled to other benefits from the employment such as pension and health care. He directed a reporter instead to file a records request with the House Chief Clerk’s office, a process that routinely takes weeks to receive and does not always produce the information requested.

The Legislature is exempt from the state’s Right-to-Know Law.

Andrews also would not return phone calls on the issue, saying he was busy at meetings all day.

LaGrotta, who also is serving as a Lawrence County Housing Authority board member, could not be reached for comment.

House Democrats have hired other defeated lawmakers, including Allegheny County Rep. Ken Ruffing and Lackawanna County Rep. Fred Belardi, according to Andrews.

Further details on their employment also were unavailable.
