McGhee appointed to Fairchance council
Newly appointed Fairchance Borough Councilman Joseph McGhee said he is glad he was chosen to serve on council and is getting ready to address the financial problems facing its garbage collection service. Council appointed McGhee on Wednesday to serve the year left in former councilman Neal D. Christopher’s term. Christopher resigned at the end of last year and accepted a job as an administrative assistant for state Rep. Timothy Mahoney, D-South Union Township.
McGhee was nominated from a field of five people who wanted the seat on council.
He was given Christopher’s old duties, which include overseeing garbage and recycling collections.
Addressing a deficit in the garbage collection budget will be one of his top priorities, he said. The deficit is about $34,000, according to one estimate, or $20,000, according to another estimate.
“We have an issue with garbage,” McGhee said.
McGhee said he plans to study the budget and talk to the union foreman in the sanitation department to find ways of reducing costs.
“Try to keep the cost down and do the service, too,” McGhee said.
Despite the tall task, he said he was happy that he received the appointment.
“I was more than glad to get the position,” McGhee said.
A husband and father, McGhee said he is a retired maintenance worker at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
He said he and his wife, Gloria, have two adult children.
McGhee also said he plans to run for a full term on council.
