N. Faye Matthews
N. Faye Matthews, 95, of Eccumenical Retirement Community, Harrisburg, Pa., died peacefully surrounded by loving members of her family at the Harrisburg Hospital on Friday, February 9, 2007. Mrs. Matthews was born in Indiana, Pa., one of 13 children of the late H.H. and Myrtle Smitley. She resided in the Uniontown/Masontown area until she moved to Camp Hill in 1956.
Faye was the widow of Jack L. Matthews and was predeceased by daughter, Evelyn Lee of Baxter, Tennessee, sons, Richard and Jack Howard Matthews, three grandsons, Jack Matthews, Russell Stehman and David Adams and many brothers and sisters.
She is survived by daughters: Ruth Ann (Rhonda Lee) George of Harrisburg, Nancy Adams of Rutherford, Billie Faye Bowman of Camp Hill; sons, Donald of Flowery Branch, Georgia and Daniel of Easton; one sister, Ruth Gaudiano of Mount Pleasant, Pa.; 24 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Matthews began her career as a Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter with the Dore Rand Children’s Shop and was retired in that same capacity from Irving’s Shoe Stores.
She was a member of Faith, Gray, McArnold V.F.W. Post Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary Post in Masontown where she had the distinction of being a Gold Star Mother (her son, Jack, having lost his life in 1950 during the Korean Conflict).
She was a former member of the Masontown Brethren Church and has been a charter and active member of Mt Olivet United Methodist Church, Shiremanstown, since the early 60’s.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 19, 2007, in the MUSSELMAN FUNERAL HOME, 324 Hummel Avenue, Lemoyne, Pa., 17043, (717-763-7440), with a visitation/viewing to begin at 11 a.m. and service to follow at noon with the Rev. Norman Evans officiating. Interment will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial contributions be made in Mrs. Matthews’ name to the Pinnacle Health Hospice, 3705 Elmwood Drive, Harrisburg, Pa., 17110.
