Deadstring Brothers – Starving Winter Report

By Clint Rhodes 2 min read

When the critics compare your sound to that of the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, you’ve got much to live up to. Fortunately, the Deadstring Brothers seem unfazed by the hype and deliver the goods on their sophomore effort, Starving Winter Report. While most new bands are falling victim to being over produced, the Deadstring Brothers sound as if they just set up in the local honky-tonk and started playing. Kurt Marschke’s vocals and lyrics carry an attitude once shown by Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. It’s rare to find a new band that delivers straightforward lyrics, while maintaining superb musical craftsmanship. Masha Marjieh’s backing vocals fit Marschke’s leads as comfortably as your favorite T-shirt and pair of Levi’s.

“Sacred Heart” starts off the set of songs that deliver a kick to the gut. The pain still lingers through songs like “Lights Go Out” and “Blindfolded.” It’s hard to believe this Americana sound is coming from a band from Detroit.

Marschke sings, “Just remember what I said / There ain’t no truth until we’re dead.” Truth is, this is an album you’ll remember for a long time to come. Place Starving Winter Report in your CD tray with Exile on Main St. and Highway 61 Revisted and let the good times roll.
